Privacy and cookies

A plain-language account of what this site stores and why.

Who is responsible

Niko Peltoniemi is the data controller for this site.

Questions or data-protection requests can be sent to niko@nikopeltoniemi.com.

Essential storage

The site stores your analytics choice in your browser under np_cookie_consent. It contains only your choice, its version and an expiry time. It expires after six months and is necessary to remember whether analytics may run.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is optional and is used only with your consent to understand readership and improve the site. Before consent, the Google tag is not downloaded and no analytics request is made.

When enabled, Analytics can collect page and referrer URLs, approximate location, browser and device information, session statistics, article selections, reading engagement, search result counts and citation downloads. The site's page-view and custom-event code removes search text from analytics URLs and never includes it as an event parameter. Analytics uses a randomly generated client identifier and first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_<container-id>. This site limits those cookies to six months from your initial consent.

Advertising storage, advertising user data, ad personalization and Google signals are disabled by this site's tag configuration. Google may process analytics data outside the EEA under its applicable transfer safeguards.

The legal basis is your consent. You can reject analytics initially or withdraw consent at any time through “Cookie settings” in the footer. Withdrawing consent updates Google's consent state and removes this site's Google Analytics cookies from the browser.

Retention and your rights

User- and event-level data in the Analytics property is retained for two months. Standard aggregated reports may be retained longer. You may ask for access, correction, deletion, restriction or a copy of personal data, and you may complain to your local data-protection authority.
